- The erasure of Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw as legitmate Houses at Hogwarts.
My siblings and I just got in a very heated discussion about what House Albus Severus would have been in. They think Gryffindor, because of course that’s all that Harry has in mind for his son. I argued on behalf of just about any other House than Gryffindor, honestly, because:
- While Sorting some times runs in families (ai: The Weasleys) what is a right place for the rest of your family might not be the right place for you. For example, Sirius got Sorted in Gryffindor while the entirety of his family was in Slytherin. Also, Parvati and Padma while twins, were Sorted into different Houses. Genetics and family names does not a House match make.
- Just because someone has trepidation over possibly getting Slytherin does not automatically lead them to be a Gryffindor. And it could still lead them to Slytherin and that would be just fine because Slytherin is not a factory of evil.
But while we were duking it out as the credits to Deathly Hallows Part 2 rolled, my sister said something about how Hufflepuff just takes all the people who no one else wants. Which really got me going. One of the sure fire ways to get me riled up and on the defensive is to smack-talk Hufflepuff (or Ravenclaw, for that matter).
So let’s talk about about Hufflepuff, because Hufflepuff is my House, and thus very close to my heart. It above all has given me a place to belong.
These are the traits that help make a ‘Puff a ‘Puff.
- loyal
- hardworking
- diligent
- kind
- accepting
So yes, of course Hufflepuff would take “the people who no one else wants”. A Hufflepuff would pat you on the back and welcome you in and make you feel at home, no matter what. They support each other in times of need. Even if they don’t shine academically like Ravenclaws, or fight as hard as Gryffindors, or have quite as much cunning and wile as a Slytherin, Hufflepuffs just keep on trucking. They stick by those whom they love, they give their all to all they do, and they’re not likely to complain while they do it. ‘Puffs make great friends and wonderful employees, because they listen and they’re willing to work as a team.
Now tell me what part of this is less important than the ability to be brave, to run into a situation headfirst and fight for your life? How is this less than the ability to always see a way out, to know exactly what do to next to benefit your chances for profit and survival?
There are more than two Houses at Hogwarts.
Yessss this so much. I get the occasional comment on my sorting Albus into Hufflepuff, which is something that never...
